What would a Union do for the Tire Industry?

There are several things that I think a Union would have done to improve the working conditions and the quality, at the plant I worked at for 10 years. 1) Gave the Visual Inspectors a greater voice about increasing the inspection time for each tire. The Visual Inspectors would be given less than a minute to inspect a tire, when production was running a combined Scrap/Rework rate around 30%. Then, the Visual Inspectors would get written up for things found in the warehouse, or returned from the market, that they missed.

2) Made sure HR treated everyone fairly when it comes to job opportunities and corrective actions. The HR department would post jobs and the qualificaitons, tell one person they couldn't apply because they didn't meet the requirements, then turn around and hire someone else that didn't meet the requirements since they weren't in their current position for the required time.

There was one guy that for years had run ins with people, got in people's faces, set up tires to fall on people, sent tires to the warehouse without inspections, and here was there for years, and even got promoted to supervisor. It took years before they got rid of him. Meanwhile, they turn around and fire someone without any write-up or consultation, for "Lack of enthusiasm".
